Johnston
Portraits
Henrietta
Deering Johnston of Ireland became America's first
pastel artist. She lived and painted in Charleston
from the time of her arrival in 1708 until her
death in 1729. Following the death of her husband,
she painted portraits of wealthy Charleston citizens.
These subjects are Mrs. Charles Pinckney and Mrs.
Robert Brewton.

Rutledge
Sofa
This
Empire mahogany sofa was made in 1820 in America.
It once belonged to the family of Archibald Rutledge
(1883-1973), Poet Laureate of South Carolina from
1934 until his death. Rutledge was a descendant
of Chief Justice Charles Pinckney and Eliza Lucas.
