Many significant events have taken place in the Large Drawing Room including four weddings within Governor’s families. These include the marriage of Governor Martin F. Ansel’s daughter in 1910, ceremonies for Governor John G. Richards’ daughters in the 1930’s and the wedding of Governor J. Strom Thurmond in 1947.

Mantel

Designed by Mrs. Burnet R. Maybank when she was First Lady (1939-41), the mantel is made from trees cut on the State Farm. The State seal is carved on each end. Covered by many years of paint, they were discovered by Mrs. Donald S. Russell and detailed in gold relief during the redecorating of the Mansion in 1964.

Sofa

Well-known cabinetmaker Ephraim Haines of Philadelphia designed this Sheraton-style sofa around 1810. It was donated to the Mansion in 1978 during the administration of Governor James B. Edwards.
